At this time of year, with the basketball season winding down, I always want to get to Anderson Arena as much as possible in hopes of getting my fill before saying goodbye for a few months. That, and the fact that it was my last chance to see the best team in the history of MAC women's basketball, took me to see the 18th-ranked Falcons take on the Miami RedHawks.
In the first half, the Falcons were pretty inconsistent and even sloppy at times. They jumped out to a decent lead, then Miami came back and tied it up, then BG pushed the lead out again, and Miami was able to fight back to close within four points at halftime. It seemed like they might be pressing a little bit--they lost their last game to Ohio and they surely wanted to get back on track pretty badly, and the emotions surrounding Senior Night may also have played a part. At any rate, they apparently decided in the locker room at halftime that they were done screwing around. They put the pedal down on the RedHawks from the start of the second half and never looked back, taking that 4-point lead and pushing it to a 30-point victory. I stuck around for a few minutes afterwards to watch them cut down the net as MAC champions. These seniors--Julie Gompers, Megan Thorburn, Amber Flynn, Carin Horne, Liz Honegger, and Ali Mann--had played their last game at Anderson Arena, but they've built a momentous legacy for future classes to try to live up to. Now it's onto the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, where they'll be shooting for their third consecutive tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Go Falcons!
